All you need to know about pruning your plants!

You must have heard about pruning and you must be doing it for many years now. But, do you know how important it is? And, how exactly it encourages the healthy growth and flowering of plants? Do you know how to prune plants correctly?

However, the time of pruning differs from time to time. Some need to be pruned in winters and others right after flowering. No matter what the season of pruning is, the first thing you need is a sharp tool.

Thereafter, these pruning tips will help you perform your job successfully.

Tips for snipping successfully

Maintain the aesthetic beauty of your plants with these pruning tips.

Prune a tree during its dormant season

Although, you can prune a plant almost in any season yet the dormant season is considered best for the purpose. Make sure no hazard exists.

Be conscientious about the size of the branch

It is important to notice the size of the branch you are going to remove carefully before starting the process. Any branch with a diameter of less than 5 cm can be easily removed.

However, you might not feel like doing it if its diameter is between 5 and 10 cm. And if its diameter is more than 10 cm, you really need a valid reason for doing so.

Trim branches that have weak, V-shaped, narrow angles

Removing weak branches is a good idea as they will not do any good. Make sure to retain branches that have strong, U-shaped angles.

There is this formula that helps in making a decision regarding lateral branches. They should be one-half and three-quarters the diameter of the stem at the point of attachment. Remove them if it is less than that.

The ration of living crown to the height

Ideally, the ratio of the living crown and height of the tree should be two-thirds after pruning. Make sure to perform your actions accordingly.

Prune plants branches at their young

Try to prune branches when they are young. It is easier and manageable at that time. It becomes way difficult when they grow up stronger. Most of all, when they are cut at their young time, the chances to leave nasty scars to reduce.

Consider the length of the branch as well

Never cut too long or too close branches. It will either leave a large stub or remove the branch collar. It will ruin the looks of your plant.

Properly trimmed and pruned plants make your space look more attractive. Removing dead and broken limbs from the plant will keep the plants healthy.
