Easy Steps to Extend the Lifespan of Your Mattress

Easy Steps to Extend the Lifespan of Your Mattress

Buying a mattress may seem like it’s an easy thing to do but, in reality, it’s not. A couple of things come to mind when purchasing a mattress; will it provide a good night’s sleep and if it will last long. You may purchase a mattress at a good price and of good quality, but we all know that nothing lasts forever. Therefore, in order to make them last longer, it is necessary that we maintain them. Below are some basic ways to help extend the lifespan of your mattress.

A number of things determine the lifespan of a mattress and these include the type and quality of material used in manufacturing it and of course, how well you take care of it. Some mattresses last for around 10 years and others may even last for 15 years. This depends on whether it’s an innerspring mattress, a high-quality form one, or a combination of the two. The material used determines to a large extent how long the mattress will last.

Tips to Make Your Mattress Last Longer

Jumping or bouncing on Mattress

Putting pressure on the mattress by jumping on your bed is an easy and fast way to damage it. Mattresses are made to help you have a good night’s sleep and thus, putting unnecessary pressure on it for an extended period of time will shorten its lifespan definitely.

No Eating in bed

Some people enjoy eating in bed while watching TV and although this may seem okay, it may attract bedbugs and other small insects to your bed. It is advisable to not eat in bed at all to prevent this from happening and make sure to change your sheets frequently.

Use A Protective Covering

Always use a protective covering for your mattress. No matter how careful you are, accidents and spills do happen every now and then, and your mattress is not safe if left with nothing to protect it. Keeping your bed neat and tidy is great however, adding a waterproof protector is a game-changer. This will ensure that your mattress is not ruined. Use a close-fitting protector to stop it from moving with every movement.

Clean your Mattress

It is imperative that you vacuum clean your mattress a few times every year. This will prevent dust and allergens from building up especially on the seams of your mattress. Make sure this is done after you’ve removed all linen from your bed first.

Keep Pets off the Mattress

A lot of people are not going to like this but allowing pets on your bed opens the door to germs, hair, bacteria, bugs, etc. Certain parasites could be passed on from your pets to your bed which could cause diseases if left unchecked.

Exposure to Sunlight

Exposing your mattress to sunlight for a few hours at least once every week will remove the excess moisture that builds up as a result of sweating and humidity. Tiny organisms that we can’t see with our naked eyes also die off when placed in sunlight.

Flip Mattress

Make it a habit to always rotate and flip your mattress every once in a while, because this will go a long way to help keep your mattress in shape. Mattresses can get damaged from a particular area if you continuously sleep on the same spot every day without ever rotating or flipping them.

Cleaning Instructions

Some mattresses come with a user manual that guides you on how to clean your mattress. Always follow the cleaning instructions given to keep your mattress clean and healthy. Some stains can be easily cleaned with a soapy solution in lukewarm water, but before you make your bed, make sure that the mattress is properly dried. Avoid using harsh chemicals when cleaning mattresses to prevent unnecessary damage.
